Assignment 2- EQ of Taoism

Assignment 1
Taoism is sometimes described as that which cannot be described, but can be known. This gets pretty difficult. The Tao, or Way, is what is commonly used. One thing that is often stressed in Taoism is the notion that everything is in a state of flux and that we can never be truly certain of anything because of this lack of permanence.

Chuang Tzu And The Butterfly Analysis

Chuang Tzu in dream became a butterfly,
And the butterfly became Chuang Tzu at waking.
Which was the real—the butterfly or the man ?
Who can tell the end of the endless changes of things?
The water that flows into the depth of the distant sea
Returns anon to the shallows of a transparent stream.
The man, raising melons outside the green gate of the city,
Was once the Prince of the East Hill.
So must rank and riches vanish.
You know it, still you toil and toil,—what for?

Prepare an answer for the following questions"
  1. Why does the author choose a butterfly? - He chose the butterfly because, the butterfly represents absolute metamorphosis and goes around to become better individuals.
  2. What is the importance of the water cycle? - The importance of water cycle is that it repeats it self, and it ends up in the destined place eventually, and this represents fate. Human can do to change the river, but in the water cycle process the water would eventually go to the ocean. This tells humans do stop try changing their fate.
  3. What is the point about the 'man raising melons'? - 'Main Raising Melons' the point is that man should stop fighting against fate, for it won't change anything and that it is stupid to do so.
  4. What is the author attempting to convey to the reader?- The author tries to convey to the authors that, fate is already decided and so, humans should not try to fight it, but go with the fate that has already been made.

WHAT DO RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY HAVE IN COMMON? And, WHY IS THE STUDY OF RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY IMPORTANT?

Religion and Philosophy are both belief that a person or people would like to believe and support. Not only that, but these two topics has the common ability to change a person or peoples' character, may their life style. These both also has the basic belief that everyone is equal and no harm should be done to each other. Basically, both wants peace in the world. Study of religion and philosophy are important because, in my opinion the religion and philosophy gives people the ability to rely on something instead of being solitary. Also by studying they can learn the belief and religion of other people, and this can allow people to understand each other or their belief and religion. This allows people to communicate better with better understanding between each other.

Discussion Questions: Filial Piety

1. In the exchange between Confucius and the Duke of She recorded in selection 5 above, we find two very different views of what "uprightness" means. What do you think being "upright" means to the Duke of She, and what does it mean to Confucius? What advantages and disadvantages do you find in each view?

- According to the Duke of She, being 'upright' means that law comes in first. However, Confucius believes that the family and filial piety is the priority in the meaning of 'uptight'. Looking in the perspective of the Duke of She, though this may create justice for the public, this can also cause damage in family relationships. In the view of Confucius, his meaning of 'upright' can benefit the relationship of ones family, but is injustice.

2. What do you think of the suggestion that people who are deeply respectful of parents and family members are likely to act as a stabilizing influence in society

- I believe that people who are deeply in respectful toward their parents and family are not likely to act as a stabilizing influence in society. My reason is, if one believes that family comes first than anything, this can cause problem. This can be viewed in the perspective of Duke of She, that this kind of person can cause injustice and a trouble among society, because law would come first than family. Respect toward family maybe important, but in society, family is not the only important ones in your life, everyone is.
